MessaggioOggetto: Beliefs in connection with death according to l' Indian.   Mar Mag 31, 2011 10:47 pm

Beliefs relating to the passage of this world in l' other varied according to the tribes, but the majority of the Indians believed qu' a man had at least two hearts: l' one was free of any fastener and could leave the body during the sleep and the disease, l' other was pinned with the body. The first immediately gained the world of the spirits after death. The second underwent the same fate as the perishable body or, at least, remained attached to him during a certain time. “Death in the Navajos Indians and other clans”

Meet with Carole Antoine which lived between 1963 and 1974 at Navajos, Hopis and Cheyennes. For Navajos, death is a rebirth, a life after the life. All forms of life has a “heart” (plants, animals, stones…). For example, lorsqu' Navajo wants to cut down a tree, this last fact a prayer “to say” to l' tree that this n' is not by spite qu' it l' but qu' cuts down; it s' d' acts; a need. At the time d' a death Navajos practises what l' the initiatory rite is called. The initiatory rite is the total fast which lasts 3 to 4 days during which absolute loneliness is of setting… During these days all have visions of their life former, present and future. During these days of “meditation”, the reserves are closed with all the foreigners. For Navajos, n' death; is not felt like a sorrow on the contrary, for them this event which saddens us so much us other Europeans is one moment of festival”. In a couple with children, lorsqu' one of the parents has suddenly died, l' education of the children is assured not only by the relative remaining but also by the remainder the family even by the whole clan. At the Indians Montain Stonies, death is said: “Of-wah-otch”.
For Tlingits, the people most threatened by l' possible ill will of late were its close relations, also the funeral they were often led by another family. Populate Amerindian north-western coast of the United States (Alaska) and Canada (islands of the Queen-Charlotte) Deaths were placed at l' variation in order to better cut the bonds which still linked them in the world of the alive ones. At Yumas, one burned l' old residence of late or, if she were always inhabited, one moved the door and the hole of smoke for l' to prevent from returning. Yumas live the north of Low-California, on Right Bank of Rio-Colorado. The body of late was incinerated, buried or placed on a scaffolding, vis-a-vis the sky. At Lakotas, the spirits known as wanagi “things of l' shade” kept the funerary scaffolding and s' in took with alive if deaths had suddenly been disturbed. The body d' a Sioux deceased was placed in the trees or on a platform out of wooden (d' scaffolding) to rather high protect the body against animals and wrapped in skins. But of the well-known chiefs were buried in secret places, unknown places, the family or the friends could do that for l' individual. Aujourd' today, they are buried in cemeteries as in d' other cultures. Many cemeteries d' Amerindians are hard to find, they are in isolated places. Indians and Inuits believed in a life after the life which always did not resemble famous “the territories of hunting of the Great mind” about which speak the Hollywood westerns. In the majority of the cases, l' one of the hearts of late joined the Creator for l' eternity.

Delawares believed that the second heart was to cross twelve cosmic levels before d' in doing as much. At Iroquois, L' heart of death wanders unhappy around his jusqu' with this qu' they gave him a tomb where it can live; c' is why Iroquois and the Greeks attached d' so much; importance to collect the bodies of the warriors fallen on the battle field. The habit d' to bury the corpses, instead of giving up them without burial with the voracity of the animals, as did it formerly Eskimaux, authorizes to suppose that l' idea of l' heart goes back to an extremely moved back antiquity, since anthropologists think that tombs of certain caves would go back to l' paleolithic time, l' the oldest time where l' one found traces positive of the presence of l' man: this n' is qu' with l' Bronze Age that l' one substituted the cremation for l' burial because l' idea of l' heart s' was transformed. Apaches
Often l' beyond n' was qu' a stage, a kind of purgatory preceding the reincarnation by l' heart. For d' other tribes the world of deaths was the negative one of that of the alive ones, and the rivers went up there towards their source. Because deaths could suffer d' to be separate the alive ones which had been particularly expensive to them, those s' endeavoured d' to reduce their sufferings. For showing well late at which point he was regretted, certain its close relations went jusqu' to gash the members or to cut a phalange of the little finger. D' others were satisfied d' to offer food in order to facilitate the passage of dead in l' another world.
